Great piece from Psychology Today: Two Reasons Personality Tests LIke Myers-Briggs Could Be Harmful
A crisis like Covid-19 highlights one of the many problems with believing the misinformation of personality tests like Myers-Briggs. If we believe that we are the sort of person who reacts to stress in a certain way, this belief is going to drive our behaviour.
This might be under estimating our ability to handle stress and caving in sooner than we otherwise might – a version of learned helplessness. Or we could overestimate our ability and carry on as if nothing is wrong, which will almost certainly end in burnout and even more stress in the longer term.
If you are in the unfortunate situation where your employer relies on this kind of pseudo-science, my advice is learn how to game the system to give them the answers they’re looking for. Just don’t go believing the results are in any way related to your personality.
